Lift Truck Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries used to power electric lift trucks should be charged regularly and properly maintained. Safety procedures should always be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is essential to check battery fluid levels.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is important for anybody working with a lift truck battery. Full protection includes safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The best way to protect clothing and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station should be located near the charging area. The path to the post must not be obstructed and an injured employee must be able to go to the eyewash post from the charging place within 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery should be at the same amperage. It must be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
While near a charging area and battery, open fire are prohibited. Never allow objects such as lighters or matches to be utilized when an employee is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
It is vital to keep the battery charging area well ventilated. The recharging process could release gas. These gases are both explosive and poisonous.
