Parts of a Tower Crane
Several of the most wonderful structures around the world are made using cranes. The newer cranes are utilized in order to reach higher heights. Tower cranes offer the means to lift and move building parts, materials and tools around a construction location. There are various components that assemble a tower crane once they are put together. Putting a tower crane together utilizes various pieces of construction equipment.
Base
Typically, the tower crane base is made from a steel unit. The base is connected to a custom-designed concrete pad. This kind of set-up gives the structure stability. Generally, the construction must be engineered and built well in order to operate at optimum safety.
Mast
The mast on the tower crane provides the machine with its overall height. The mast is constructed out of separate steel parts which are connected together. The amount of sections determines the crane's height. Typically, a tower crane has a design that allows the mast to grow during construction by adding more parts as the building process continues. This way the height of the crane can be specified, making certain that it has sufficient height to safely and efficiently perform the required work.
Slewing Unit/Top Climber
Above the mast is the slewing unit. It houses the motor and machines which enables the crane to rotate. A top climber is the piece of equipment that allows the mast to grow. The top climber sits just underneath the slewing unit. Hydraulic rams in the top climber enable the slewing unit to be disconnected from the mast by raising it higher.
Boom
The term "boom", refers to the tower crane's working arm. The boom is made up of separate steel parts that are connected together, extending out from the top of the slewing unit and parallel to the ground. There is a trolley connected to the base which can extend the length of the boom. This trolley has the hoisting mechanism.
